What is elder law?

Elder law is an area of law where lawyers assist seniors and their families with planningfor medicaid benefits, veterans benefits, long term care, and eventually planning for the distribution of their assets upon their death through various trusts, wills, and the like. But it is a specialized area of law because of the rules regarding planning for medicaid and veterans pensions benefits that require the expertise of somebody that does this work on a regular basis. It is different from estate planning because estate planning is simply planning for the distribution of assets, not the preservation of assets for the purposes of qualifying for medicaid benefits or veterans pension benefits.
