What is a health care proxy?

A healthcare proxy is a person who, under our Florida statutes, is designated to make a healthcare decision for you. A proxy is somebody then that is not appointed in a document that is written by you, telling them that they are going to make your medical decisions for you. That is a surrogate. A proxy is somebody that is named in the statutes and there’s an order of succession of those people then that can make medical decisions for you if you do not have a medical power of attorney or a healthcare surrogate designation document.
